Grace Nakibaala,
the Ugandan graduate reinventing humanitarian relief.

A graduate architect and an Innovation Fellow at Makerere University, Grace Nakibaala has participated at Global Grad Show 2018 and 2019 with her innovations, that have since been widely implemented across Uganda. Built as a response to reduce contact with hand-washing facilities placed across public spaces, PedalTap (2018) is a hands-free foot operated water-dispensing device. The device is designed to be retrofittable and affordable: it can be installed on any existing tap with minimal effort and cost.

Nakibaala's EpiTent is designed to be deployed during humanitarian emergencies. Effective and efficient to use, the unique design of the semi-permanent structures tackles the key issues of lack of natural ventilation in existing emergency housing. EpiTent dramatically cuts humidity levels and provides extra privacy to those inside. BBC world spoke with Grace for further insight into her project EpiTent, on the importance of humanitarian innovation and designing for social impact. To listen to the whole interview, click here
