Maria Isabel Alvarado is a PhD student in Applied Physics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, with a background in materials engineering from Universidad de Concepción. Her research focuses on sustainable water treatment and resource recovery. She has contributed to the Mistra TerraClean project, addressing the removal of PFAS and active pharmaceutical ingredients from wastewater, and to the EU-funded INSPIRE project on microplastic degradation. Currently, she is developing methods to produce green ammonia from nitrate-containing wastewater, advancing circular and sustainable solutions that address both eutrophication and CO₂ contamination challenges.
