Antibody-based alternative to antibiotics

This research explores a novel immunotherapy for Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium linked to ulcers and gastric cancer. Instead of antibiotics, it uses antibodies from immunised hens to block a protein essential for the bacterium’s survival. In lab tests, these antibodies cut the activity of urease, an enzyme H. pylori uses to neutralize stomach acid, by more than 84%, and inhibit bacterial growth. The approach shows promise as a safer, resistance-free alternative to antibiotics, potentially offering new hope for millions affected by this widespread infection
