H-FLO

About

Safety device composed of two segments that separate when underwater

H-FLO is an innovative, life-saving device for high-risk, underwater workers. The project was inspired by a tragedy in which two men were working on a bridge, harnessed to their suspended platform as per Health and Safety guidelines. When the platform gave way and plunged into the water below, both workers drowned as they were not able to detach their harnesses. H-FLO is an attachable cylinder that automatically releases the worker from his or her harness in less than five seconds. The device separates the user and harness using two opposing shafts, held together with a pin. When H-FLO is submerged, a gas canister is punctured, issuing a high-pressure blast that releases the pin.
