Haptic interface for a self driving car

Stewart II is a tactile interface between a passenger and his or her autonomous car. The device provides continual haptic and visual updates on the car’s intended and upcoming movements. If the passenger disagrees with the automated decision, he or she can use the Stewart II device to change the car’s course. Occupying a space between user and machine-operated, the Stewart II rethinks the shift to automated control.

    Felix Ros is a graduate student in the Department for Industrial Design of Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands. He is interested in creating useful products that fulfil a function through an aesthetic interaction. Furthermore, I’m interested in the relation between human and technology. His work on Stewart, a haptic interface designed for a self-driving car that allows for a haptic dialogue between car and driver, received international attention.more
