Upp – Smiling our way to an inclusive classroom

A badge to encourage empathy in children

Upp is a smart device that captures and tallies smiles in classrooms as a means of nurturing empathy and compassion in children. Taking the form of a playful clip-on badge, the device is built and worn by children throughout the academic year – its built-in camera capturing how many smiles each child receives from their teacher and peers. A jar sits in the classroom that visualises every caught smile with a cloud that slowly floats upwards, providing a representation of the students’ mood and morale.
