KAWU

KAWU

Project Overview

About

Kawu is a prepaid Smart Card system designed to promote financial inclusion among African students. While only 20% of African families use banks, Mobile Money's popularity is rising, with 548m accounts in 2020. Yet, students often lack access due to phone restrictions in schools and limited commercial appeal for banks. The Kawu Smart Card, funded by parents through the Kawu app using Mobile Money, allows students to pay, save, and withdraw cash without phones or bank accounts. This system not only offers security but also enables parents to monitor their children's expenditure, furthering financial literacy.
