About

PPM introduces a breakthrough in corrosion protection with self-healing, recyclable coatings made from copolymers of poly(phenylene methylene) (PPM). Traditional coatings face challenges such as limited recyclability and hazardous pre-treatments. PPM coatings offer superior corrosion resistance, automatically repairing damage through heat generated by corrosion reactions, and can be applied much more thinly than conventional coatings. As well as supporting a circular economy, by being fully recyclable, the coating’s fluorescence allows for early detection and quality control of corrosion and damage

Marco F. D’Elia is a chemist born on September 28 in Como, Italy. He got his BS in Chemistry from University of Insubria in 2015 and then his MSc in Industrial Chemistry from University of Milan in 2018 completing his MSc thesis as exchange student at ETH Zürich in the group of multifunctional materials developing a new photoluminescent anticorrosion coating based on poly(phenylene methylene). He continued this work during is PhD concluded in 2022, achieving the Spark award for the best ETH invention in 2023. After a period in industry, Marco came back to ETH Zurich to commercialize this invention.
