The Biorecycling Machine

The Biorecycling Machine

About

Bio Recycling Machine is an alternative end-of-life option for 3D printer waste. This speculative recycling device invites to consider polylactic acid (PLA) biocompatibility with the human body. Currently, PLA is a material used extensively in medical applications including drug delivery systems, sutures, screws, and implants. Using a handheld tool based on a contemporary rotary tattooing device, PLA polymer ink – made from discarded 3D printed material, powdered and mixed into a saline solution – is deposited into a person’s intramuscular tissue. Once inside the body, the PLA is metabolised and biologically recycled.
