Urobo Biotech targets bioplastic waste management and sustainability amid the plastic pollution crisis. Urobo Biotech's solution uses a microbial expression system to develop enzyme mixtures that break down bioplastics into essential building blocks, promoting a circular bioplastics economy. I am a researcher and co-founder dedicated to addressing one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. With a background in environmental science, biotechnology, and entrepreneurship, I am currently pursuing a PhD at Stellenbosch University and the University of Padova. My journey is driven by a belief in the necessity of tackling the plastic pollution crisis on a worldwide-scale. Having experienced academic environments across different continents, I've gained a unique international perspective that informs my approach to finding global solutions. With my team at Urobo Biotech, we are actively contributing to the broader goal of decarbonization and sustainability.

Marthinus Wessel Myburgh

I am a microbiologist, specializing in yeast biotechnology and molecular biology, currently completing my PhD at Stellenbosch University and the University of Padova. As many other young people around the world, I am painfully aware of the plastic pollution crisis our generation faces. I aim to leverage my expertise to help tackle this crisis and develop technologies that can shift the perception surrounding plastics from a low-value, highly problematic waste to a high-value feedstock that can help build a circular bio-economy. Together with my team, we are currently developing and commercializing enzyme-based waste management processes for end-of-life bioplastics.
