Third Culture Kids – Play to Heal

About

Play therapy for expats’ children emotional hurdles

The increasing expat population of Qatar has led to a large number of Third Culture Kids (TCKs). – Young children between the ages of three and seven, who do not possess the skills to adequately vocalise their feelings.

TCKs utilises concepts derived from play therapy and interaction to overcome the emotional hurdles faced by Third Culture kids. By offering a series of interactive objects designed to reflect emotional expression through movement, children are able to establish a relationship with objects and channel their emotions.

I am an interdisciplinary designer from Pakistan. My work process is directed through digital ideations and prototyping which manifest into tangible creations that highlight materiality and function. My goal is to collaborate with other industry professionals by offering them design solutions curated specifically to their needs. My current research focuses on Play Therapy for Third Culture Kids in Qatar. I worked closely with play therapists and recognized a lack of innovation and variety in the toys that are available to them. This led me to create a series of novel and interactive toys that allow the users autonomy in play and offer a range of expressions. more
